Cape Hearing Implants (CHi)
We are thrilled to announce that Cape Hearing Implants (CHi), a non-profit company based in Cape Town dedicated to providing implantable hearing solutions, has been voted to helm the South African Cochlear Implantation Group (SACIG) Executive Committee (ExCo) for the next two years. This is not just a significant milestone for our organization; it’s a landmark moment for the entire audiology community in South Africa.
The leadership team at CHi is led by our newly elected chairman, Dr. Louis Hofmeyr, a seasoned expert in otology, neur-otology and audiology. With him, Adri Schlichting steps into the role of secretary, bringing her organisational skills, knowledge of cochlear implant management and a passion for enhancing the quality of life for individuals with hearing impairments. Together, alongside their capable colleagues, they will steer the group toward our shared vision of elevating cochlear implantation standards across the nation.

A Driving Force in Audiology and Cochlear Implantation
Under the guidance of our audiologist Liezel Kotze, who possesses a wealth of experience in hearing aid technology for the past 24 years, CHi is pushing the frontiers of what’s possible in auditory health. Her dedicated team at Hearing Balance Cape Town is committed to ensuring that patients have access to the latest advancements in cochlear implantation and hearing amplification. Their collective expertise not only empowers patients to hear again, but also educates them on the best practices for maintaining and maximising the benefits of their implants.
In a historical context, Cape Hearing Implants is the first private practice team to be awarded this prestigious honour within SACIG, which serves as the official subgroup of the South African Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Society. This achievement underscores the significance of our work and the respect our team has gained within the broader medical community. We take this responsibility with great seriousness and are excited about the opportunity to shape the framework of cochlear implantation practices throughout South Africa.
Our Mission and Responsibilities
As the official ExCo of SACIG, our primary duty is to uphold and enhance the standards of cochlear implantation across South Africa. This involves developing best practices, providing ongoing training, and working alongside healthcare professionals to ensure that patients receive the best possible treatment and care.
The responsibility we have undertaken extends beyond just governance; we are committed to a mission that prioritises access, education, and advocacy in the field of cochlear implantation. We aim to create an environment where patients from all walks of life have access to implantable hearing devices, empowering them with the gift of hearing and the ability to interact with the world around them.
The Road Ahead
As we embark on this journey, we invite all stakeholders—from healthcare providers to patients to families—to join us in our mission. By fostering collaboration and communication, we can create a more informed and supportive community for those dealing with hearing loss and communication barriers.
We believe that every effort counts, and together, we can raise awareness of the life changing role cochlear implants play in transforming lives. We encourage you to reach out with your stories, experiences, and feedback; your input is invaluable to us as we work diligently to achieve our goals.
In conclusion, being entrusted with the leadership of SACIG is both an honour and a commitment. At CHi, we are excited about what the future holds for the audiology community and the patients we serve. Together, we can ensure that the highest standards of care are upheld and that hearing loss is addressed with compassion and expertise.
